The latest Upwork Skills Index reflects the growth of nontraditional education options for employees and freelancers—and underscores why skills training and reskilling is essential for anyone in the workforce. The Skills Index ranks the 20 fastest-growing skills on the Upwork site on a quarterly basis. It reflects emerging skills and provides real-time validation of current trends in the labor market and tech industry.
For the final quarter of 2018, the Index includes employee training (#11) and Learning Management Solution consulting (#18). Growth in these areas suggests an emerging trend where more people are getting training on the job.
“Businesses are placing a greater emphasis on skills training, investing in the workforces they have today and the one they will need tomorrow,” said Stephane Kasriel, CEO of Upwork.
Freelancers already understand that skills are what matter most. According to Freelancing in America, an annual survey by Upwork and Freelancers Union, they’re more likely than traditional employees to participate in skills-related education. In fact, freelancers with a four-year degree are more likely to rate skills training as more useful to the work they do now (93%) than their college education (79%).
The Skills Index also shows how companies are leveraging freelancers to bridge knowledge gaps, with the most popular skills echoing corporate investments in big data, mobile optimization, superior customer service, and cybersecurity.
